KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 – Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), through its investment sector, is now venturing into the carbon credit industry as part of the agency’s new initiative to strengthen its strategic investment portfolio.
MARA Director-General, Datuk Zulfikri Osman, said the move is being implemented through the establishment of PMB Sustainable Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary under Pelaburan MARA Berhad that is fully focused on the industry.
He explained that the exploration of carbon credits is aligned with global developments, as many countries have begun to prioritize the sector as one of the industries of the future.
“We know that overseas, many have already entered this field, and I believe in Malaysia, this MARA subsidiary under Pelaburan MARA Berhad is among the first to be involved in the industry. Although it is still relatively early in our country, we are among the earliest to take this step,” he told RTM recently.
The venture into the carbon credit industry is seen as having the potential to become a new economic source, while supporting environmental sustainability efforts through carbon emission reduction.
The concept of carbon credits assigns value to parties or companies that successfully reduce carbon emissions through initiatives such as forest conservation, clean energy usage, and sustainable projects.
Further commenting, Zulfikri said MARA’s investment sector, with most subsidiaries operating under MARA Corporation, acts as the agency’s business arm with various strategies being planned, including property development and sustainability initiatives.
When asked about the possibility of MARA expanding into the renewable energy (RE) and electric vehicle (EV) sectors, he did not dismiss the market potential but emphasized that the agency’s core focus will remain intact.
“Yes, that is indeed possible, but MARA’s core business is actually education,” he said.
