PUTRAJAYA: All 97 companies under the 10 agencies of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry are urged to reduce its dependency on the government and "think out of the box" to improve further their performances.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said he was pleased to see these companies heading in the right direction after they posted a high net profit of RM249 million in 2013 compared to RM149 million in 2012.
Felcra Niaga and Pelaburan Mara Berhad are among top-performing companies in 2013.
"The good performance is due to the companies practising efficient management," said Shafie to reporters after having a meeting with the board of directors of these companies today.
He added these companies have the potential to be more successful than private companies as they are backed by the government.
However, he said these companies need to be proactive, creative and responsive in facing challenges, especially in today's competitive market.
"I hope that they are are up for this challenge and emerge as industry leaders in their respective sectors. The time has come for us to be a game changer and trend setter," added Shafie.
Meanwhile, Shafie also urged these companies to take the criticism and advise from the Auditor General and make necessary improvements immediately.
